Toddler Talk

THURSDAY, January 2nd
"It's cooking. It's getting warm. It's being a jack-in-the-box like Curious George," said Victoria as she described her toasting bread. Also, in reference to still wearing her footie pajamas: "I have a ballerina on my bum."

FRIDAY, January 3rd
Toria, regarding water to quell her coughing: I need some water. Sometimes my throat says, "feed me feed me." I tell Victoria to listen for bubbles in her tummy because that's its way of saying, "Feed me! Feed me!"
And in response to me (Danielle) biting my cheek: "I can read a story so it can stop hurting!"

SUNDAY, January 5th
V: It's time to go to heaven now.
M: What are we going to do in heaven?
V: We're going to heaven to go see God and get Jesus...So Jesus is my friend.
She also regularly draws picture for God and Jesus.

TUESDAY, January 7th We went to the institute building for a team up with the missionaries.
V: Shh, stop talking. I telling you a story. showing her "document" (a pass-along card) You need to be really righteous so you can get a new body. hearing a car drive by and splash snow the car splash in the puddle...and you and me and mom get dirty.
D: Victoria's telling me a story.
M: Oh?
V: Mom, you want to hear my story too Mom? Come... Noah...
M: What did Noah do?
V: Noah waiting for Nephi.
M &D: To one another This is going to be interesting.
M: To Toria What are they going to do?
D: Are they going to build a boat?
V: They going to the Promised Land. defensively holding as many pass-along cards as she can No, those are not your documents!

Several minutes of distracted struggle ensued and ended with the cards being replaced on the shelf and us leaving the institute building.

SATURDAY, January 11th
M: Victoria we have a very important question for you, so we want you to think carefully about your answer.
V: Ok. My answer is...pink polk-a-dots.

D: Can I tickle you?
V: No! I not your daughter (a new word whose meaning may not yet be fully understood.)
D: Can you tickle me?
V: No, I can't. You a boy. proceeds with attempted tickling

V: Dad, what is liberty? Our scripture vocab words from last night were liberty and prosper. She was quizzing him.

V: Want SUGAR COOKIES or some other cookies? I was just asking. (Her contribution to our discussion of what we should do for FHE treats.)

SUNDAY, January 12th
V: as we readied the computer for video chatting with Oma, Opa, & Jonny, I want to talk to Grandpa! I can't see him.

V: Daddy, I read you scriptures. Almighty God...created in His image...the things I have made...it was good. Almighty God...We think her nursery lesson was on the creation, but she wouldn't answer any direct questions about it.

WEDNESDAY, January 15th Victoria kept saying Almighty God this morning which led to the following conversation.

M: We need to be careful when we say God's name, because it's special.
V: Suddenly and obviously reverent I love God.

THURSDAY, January 16th I overheard this gem while Victoria was cleaning the walls and muttering to herself.

V: I can't be a mommy. I can't be a mommy because I don't have a daddy as a husband.
We've been trying to teach her that she doesn't get to marry Daddy. Yesterday she told me that she would "go in and marry Daddy in the temple but that Mom would stay outside."

FRIDAY, January 17th
Victoria gets spanked for blatant disobedience which usually conveniently aligns itself with major rules like don't hurt people or things. I asked her to choose to be happy during a semi-rare post-spanking fit and she responded sobbing, "I don't want to be happy. I want to be SAD."

SUNDAY, January 19th
After playing superheroes at her friends house a couple days ago...
V: I'm a super hero.
M: Oh yeah? And is your super power to love everybody?
V: shakes her head Nah.
D: What is your super power?
V: Nutella.
M: That's a good super power.

V: I'm back now from my mission.
M & D: Really? That was short. seeing her tricycle out Did you know that missionaries ride bikes?
V: No, they ride tricycles.

THURSDAY, January 23rd
M: I'm going to kiss you and love you and squeeze the cream filling right out of you.
V: No, don't squeeze the filling out of me. I don't have anything in my heart. Just baby.

TUESDAY, January 28th Learning to pray
M: Dear Lord...We thank thee that we are not too sick--
V: after coughing mid prayer I am too sick.

Frozen in Illinois

2013 Highlights:
Building Elmo (Toria's first snowman), belated pumpkin carving, winning a free mountain bike, family push-up contest, Danielle's birthday, Toria's first kiss (Zayden Maughan), puddle jumping, visiting the arboretum, learning new games (Nice to Meet You, Forbidden Island, & Argicola), moving to Tucson, swimming lots, vacation to UT, a friend's baptism, moved into Winfield Village, got a tricycle, Toria and Greg's birthdays, visits to Curtis Orchard, playing with Phoebe Decker, Thanksgiving and Christmas in Indianapolis, potty training? early Christmas presents, and our 4 year wedding anniversary.

What will God send in 2014? Well to start with we'll be getting a nice winter storm and some arctic cold fronts this weekend. Our winter started late here, just like last year. Speaking of last year, we ended it all with a great, extended celebration of an awesome four years of marriage: approximately 7 moves, two bachelor degrees, one beautiful birthing experience, and now grad school with a tremendous toddler princess who keeps asking for siblings.

One of the things we did together was go to the movie "Frozen." It was delightful and I've had a hard time not thinking about it the past few days. The animation was great, the characters lovable, the story well-told, the music enchanting and varied. But my favorite part was the lessons I learned. A great teacher and friend recently asked us what we would be letting go of as we entered the new year. I was surprised by my response: "To let go of the hardness in my heart over an as-of-yet unfulfilled dream. Love can soften the saddest and hardest of hearts I think." I always knew that God's love for me could work untold miracles in my life. I'm realizing too that the love of a husband or a daughter and the self-love they have cultivated in me are also miraculous. Truly wrote John that "perfect love casteth out all fear" (1 John 4:18). Watching an animated children's film with my husband help me better understand this. That may be cheesey, but I eat cheese...well, goat's cheese anyway!

In addition to more love and miracles, in two thousand FOURteen I'm trying to record our family New Year's resolutions because who says less is more? This year I want to do and be more!!!

More potty training and weaning for Toria
More writing for Greg and studying math for Danielle
More momentum from 2013's successes and instructive failures
More children!

What about you? What will YOU do this year? We talk about starting over and habits we'd like to leave behind. Is there anything you hope to continue doing from last year?
